Spier Contemporary is one the most important exhibitions on the African continent that recognizes and celebrates what it means to be in Africa today and what is possible for 21st century Africans. The event is organized by the Africa Centre , an organization that stages a number of other events too, like Badilisha Poetry X-change and Infecting the City: Public Arts Festival , to support and promote the arts in Southern Africa.

The exhibition is of a breathtaking level: aesthetics, philosophy and engagement are combined in a way that shows the visitor an incredible overview of Africa’s contemporary artistic expression. An important part of the show is the performances. Performance contains a lot of meaning in a variety of African cultures; this enforces the quality of today’s visual arts performances a great deal. 

Furthermore the event also offers a few workshops and grants that are crucial to the development of a professional art scene. Six artists receive a career development grant and seven additional artists-in-residency awards are handed out. Sicelo Ziqubu and Jacki McInne, two of the winners, will go Instituto Sacatar in Bahia, Brazil. Besides that the Africa Centre also organizes a curatorial internship
programme.
