It’s almost common to see, on the contemporary art scene, artists using any king of material to compose their works. The infinite list goes from wine to trash, from snacks to ashes, from pins to buttons. With such possibilities, creativity has a lead role on picking the right materials, a lesson that Cai Guo-Qiang seems to know by heart: to elaborate his canvases, the chinese uses gunpowder.
The explosive installations begin with the artist carefully spreading the gunpowder over a canvas or fabric, creating the shapes and figures he wants. Done that, the canvas is covered with cardboards and rocks, used to control the explosion and make sure the drawing stays as planned. At last, the ignition fires a small pyrotechnic show, writing the result on the canvas that is later exposed.
