Brendan Flanagan’s latest exhibit was entitled Revenant, a word used to define folkloric corpses that return from their graves. Indeed, the Canadian’s paintings transmit this macabre idea, as they are full of cadaverous figures on their last moments of sanity, striving for something lost in desolated and swampy landscapes.
Their shapes are so fluid that they’re almost liquid, always just about to leak from their frames through the walls they’re hanged on. The grotesque reality created by the artist is not so different from what is happening now on the Gulf of Mexico, where wild creatures agonize on the spilled oil, a point that lends his work a definitely contemporary aspect.
